From an Advocacy to a Tradition | Mother's Day Origin and History
Dated: May 4 2022
Happy Mother's Day everyone! It's so refreshing to see that a day is dedicated to all the mothers out there for the love and sacrifice they gave to all of us. Each of us has their own story with their moms that they will always remember, whether it be good or bad. But how and when did this worldwide dedication day start?
It all started back in 1858 when Ann Jarvis was pregnant with her sixth child. She began Mothers' Day Work Clubs in the towns of Grafton, Pruntytown, Philippi, Fetterman, and Webster (all from West Virginia), advocating for better health and sanitary conditions. She continued with her advocacy until her death on on May 9, 1905.
Three years later, her daughter, Anna Jarvis, held a memorial ceremony to honor not just her mother, but all mothers, on May 10, 1908, which marked the first observance of Mother's Day. After five years, people all over United States is celebrating Mother's Day, which eventually became a national holiday as approved by then U.S. President Woodrow Wilson.
What started as an advocacy towards health and safety for everyone ended up being a celebration towards all mothers across the globe. It truly shows that a mother's love can move mountains.
