A Single Father's Story: How the Father's Day Came to Be
Dated: June 8 2022
People have been celebrating the Mother's Day in May and Father's Day in June, and this totally make sense - a celebration for each parent. While the Mother's Day started with an advocacy (read more here: https://bit.ly/3zn4GYZ), Father's Day was started by a War Veteran and a single father of 14 children, a year after Mother's Day was established.
The person responsible for Father's Day is Sonora Smart Dodd, daughter of the late William Jackson Smart, who said that fathers deserved their own celebration too. She honored her father in a church service at Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South (now known as the Central United Methodist Church).
Establishing this holiday met a lot of challenges, as there has been a resistance to holiday celebrations due to rampant commercialism. There was even an attempt to combine both the Mother's Day and Father's day, naming it Parent's Day, but this proposal failed. This was at the time of the great depression, where a lot of people just can't afford anything, which is totally understandable why a lot of people are against the holidays. Eventually, the resistance died out, and here we are celebrating a day to honor our fathers, which has been declared as a national holiday on 1972.
Father's Day is celebrated every third Sunday of June, which will be on June 19 this year.
